Garry Ablett Jr Wins Brownlow
Third time lucky for the Geelong Champion!
Last night Garry Ablett Jr took home Charlie after racking up 30 votes during the 2009 Home and Away season. Ablett was announced the winner with two rounds to go after polling 3 votes against Sydney in round 20.
The Geelong midfielder found himself in an unbeatable position 7 points clear on 26 votes when AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou announced Garry Ablett as this years Brownlow Medalist.
Ablett polled consistently this year racking up votes in 13 of the 19 games he played this season (Ablett missed 3 games due to injury).
St Kilda’s midfielder Nick Dal Santo sprinted out of the blocks early racking up votes, putting him on 12 at the half way mark of the voting. Team mate Lenny Hayes had an equally good year polling the most amount of votes for a St Kilda player with 20.
It was former Brownlow medalist Chris Judd who gave Ablett a run for his money racking up a bevy of votes in the second half of the season, however he still couldn’t catch the Geelong champion.
On winning the award Ablett said “it still feels so surreal, Im shaking”.
His attention now shifts to Saturday’s AFL Grand Final against St Kilda where Ablett hopes his team can make up for last years loss at hands of Hawthorn.
